The Tactile Book Advancement Group (TBAG) held an international competition in 2008 to encourage more people to take up the challenge of designing and making books with effective tactile illustrations for visually-impaired children. The competition was organised in association with the ‘Tactile Graphics 2008’ conference in Birmingham, UK, from 3 - 5 December 2008 run by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

TBAG International Tactile Book Competition Results

star award tropy

Many thanks to everyone who entered the Tactile Book Advancement Group's first ever tactile book competition.  We were delighted to receive 70 entries from 11 countries, and were thrilled with the very high quality of the books.

Six judges spent two exhilarating but exhausting days carefully examining all the entries, and it was a very difficult job choosing the winners in each category.  However, we did eventually manage to reach agreement, and the winners and highly commended books are as follows (all the photographs are copyright of RNIB 2008)

Book for age 13+ with additional learning difficulties

Although some interesting books were submitted in the age 13-plus with learning difficulties category, the judges did not feel able to award a prize, because, in most cases, the text and/or illustrations were felt to be too complicated for these youngsters. However, two of the entries were singled out for praise:

Highly Commended:
Growing Vegetable Soup by Marcy Meyer, USA

Boys by Hillary Hamilton, UK

Book for any age produced by a mainstream publisher

A number of UK mainstream publishers submitted books which they felt had sufficient tactile interest to appeal to a visually-impaired child.

Winner: This is my Monster by Sam Taplin, Stephanie Jones and Matsumi Furukawa (Usborne Books)

Highly Commended:
Terrible Trolls by Delphine Durand (Campbell Books, an imprint of Macmillan Children's Books)

The prize winning and highly commended books, along with some others which were thought to be particularly good, were displayed at the fourth International Tactile Graphics Conference in Birmingham on 4-5 December, and conference delegates were invited to vote for "the people's favourite". Ninety people with a strong interest in tactile graphics enjoyed the books and took the time to vote for their favourite, with 14 different books receiving votes.  The result was:

The makers of the winning books will be receiving their prizes, trophies and certificates soon: congratulations to you all.  Once again, many thanks to everyone who took part in this competition and in so doing helped raise awareness of tactile books. Later in 2009, all books will be either returned or donated in accordance with the maker's wishes expressed on the entry forms.

Photographs of the prizewinning, books posted on this website, disseminate the good practice this competition has demonstrated.
